Tip of the Day
WINTER TROUT: Winter is often the most overlooked time of year with respect to catching trout on light spinning tackle. If the snow has not completely blocked you from getting streamside, and as long as there is some water that is not iced over, there will always be opportunity to hook into a few. For bait fishing, try small things like meal worms on a small (size #10 or smaller) hook, and just enough split shot to sink the rig. Small (1/12 oz) Kastmaster-type spoons also work this time of year; and little Swedish Pimples can also be effective. You may think of these more as ice-fishing lures, but casting them to sometimes finicky winter trout in streams can be very effective. Work the rod tip up and down a bit, in the retrieve. 2-4 lb. test line. Although there will always be a few trout around, a day where it warms up a bit will bring the best results. Good time of year to fish midday, as opposed to morning/evening.

PA POND CATFISH: Our Technical Advisor, Zombo, with a 29 inch channel cat that was caught using 4 LB test line and a shiner, while bank fishing a Harrisburg area orchard’s irrigation pond. Circa 1992. It took 2 hours to land the fish, carefully letting it run and walking and/or running it up and down the shoreline. After taking it home for a few photos, the fish was later returned to the pond in a cooler full of water and released.
