The Beater Rod
The beater rod belonging to our Technical Advisor, Zombo. The set-up consists of a circa 1970 South Bend spinning rod and a Silstar "Tiny" reel circa 2006. This is a mighty weapon down on the Clark's Creek when armed with a Thomas Rough Rider.

SPORTSMEN'S BLOG
Here is a link to a blog that is growing in popularity, Moose Knuckle Fly Fishing. The content runs from informative to humorous. Some of the content has a PG to Mature rating, because when you get down to it many people lead those kind of lives. For example, there might be some cussin'. Posts include Utah and Northeast (including New England) fly fishing action, Pennsylvania fishing action, and there will be some ice fishing posts whenever the water is hard enough.

FALL SNOW
We got a taste of Winter in Dauphin with 5 inches of snow on 10/29/11. We don't normally put the plow on until Thanksgiving, so we did not put it on for this snowfall hoping it was a freak event. But we had a few big tropical storms a couple of months back, recently experienced our first earthquake and now this, so who knows. Maybe we better put the plow on.

FOX SQUIRREL?
This huge squirrel was raiding our feeder on 12/27/11 and we think it might have been a fox squirrel. It was quite a bit larger than the other squirrels visiting that day, plus there was a rusty tint on certain portions of its body. It definitely loved the shelled peanuts we mix in with our bird seed.

Fast, 5:1 gear ratios. The model QS-520FD holds 195yds of 4lb, 140 of 6lb and 110yds of 8lb mono. The 520FD is 8.6 ounces. The model QS-530FD holds 200yds of 6lb, 160 of 8 and 110yds of 10lb mono. Weight of the 530FD is 9 ounces. An extra graphite spool is included with both models.

Tip of the Day

NEED BAIT?: Composting is great for gardeners, but a compost heap has the additional benefit of free bait—worms and insect larvae—for the gardener who just happens to like fishing. A compost heap works best if it is contained somehow. A heap for both bait and fertilizer purposes can be kept in a 3’ x 3’ area fenced off with 24 inch hardware cloth available at hardware stores. Drive posts into the ground to form a square and then staple the hardware cloth (chicken wire will also work) on each side to form the containment area. A door can be made with scrap lumber and a couple of hinges. Throw kitchen scraps in here, but try refraining from meat-based things because this attracts skunks and cats. Throw in some “dry” ingredients occasionally, such as straw or leaves, and mix monthly with a shovel. After just a couple of months, dig down to the bottom to find worms and larvae. The heap will cook down to form usable compost in about a year.

1/1/12 PENNSYLVANIA TROUT: A nice trout taken by Zombo (and released as soon as the picture was snapped) using a Trout Magnet head and a bit a worm. The worms were dug out from underneath the warmth of the compost heap. The rod/reel used was the Garcia Mitchell ultralight set-up that was a HS graduation gift in 1979 and is still going strong.

Connecticut Bass: Chris Ellegard with a largemouth bass caught 5/22/10 on a #4 Swiss Swing from Bee-Barb Outfitters.
